What Are Dentures?
- Dentures are one of the options of replacing a missing tooth. The dentists requests for a dental laboratory to make an appliance to replace missing teeth.
- They are generally made using a Plastic/Acrylic base and sometimes include clasps for better retention.
- In some cases, clasps are not recommended.
- There are different types of dentures.
What are Different Types of Dentures?
- Fixed (Implant retained) or Removable
- Partial or Full (Depending on whether it is to replace one or many or all teeth)
- Upper or Lower (Depending on whether it is for the Upper arch or Lower Arch or both upper and lower arches)
- Implant Supported Dentures (using attachments eg. Magnets, Screws, Ball attachments, etc.)
- Material used (Acrylic, Chrome, Flexible Denture, Mixture of materials)
- Delayed Denture (where we need to wait for the gum to heal first before we make a denture for you)
- Immediate Dentures (So you don’t have to go home with teeth if the dentist recommends a tooth or teeth to be removed).
What is the procedure of making a Denture?
- The dentist would need to carry out a Full Examination
- The dentist would discuss all Gap closure options with you
- Impressions of your mouth are taken (along with other several bits of clinical information) and this is then sent to the Dental Laboratory.
- It takes approximately 1-6 visits (depending on the nature of your case), for the laboratory to give us a complete denture ready to fit in your mouth.
- We can give you a denture in 7-14 days, generally.
I don’t want to go home without teeth. What is the process?
- It is the same as with any case for denture fabrication.
- The only difference is that we ask the lab to plan the case slightly differently.
- We ask the lab to plan the case and make the denture to include the teeth we are planning on extracting/removing.
- This way, we can remove the teeth/tooth and same time fit the denture in place so that you don’t have to go home with a missing tooth or teeth.
What are The Benefits of wearing Dentures?
- Patients can chew with dentures and nourish themselves with being to eat with dentures.
- They give a better appearance with lip and facial support.
- They can improve speech changes in contrast to patients without any teeth, for example.
- They prevent adjacent teeth from drifting and opposing teeth from over-erupting.
- They retain a gap and help dentist know exactly what the cosmetic preferences are for each patient, as part of panned procedures for Dental Implant Treatment.
- Most of all, they are a cost effective way of closing gaps or replacing missing teeth.
Are there any challenges to wearing a denture?
- Like most things in life, there are limitations.
- Not everyone can get along with dentures, and sometimes patients need to consider dental implants to meet their personal expectations.
- Dentures can be uncomfortable to get used to for the following reasons:
a. They can be sore on the gums when patients bite hard
b. The can alter the speech, lead to an absence of taste (if it covers the roof of the mouth) and the chewing of hard foods can sometimes be challenging.
c. As the years go by, the underlying supporting bone decreases in size, and the denture support can be reduced or completely lost in some cases with the elderly. In these cases, new dentures would be most likely required.
d. Dentures can sometimes slide during function or become unstable.
- We generally advise dental Implant supported appliances for patients who wish to have a better quality of life than dentures.
