Dental Emergency
Tooting Bec
Dental emergencies often occur when you least need it. Here at Tooting Bec Dental Practice we have our own emergency dentist. We aim to offer you all options of treatment, and as soon as you have been given the opportunity to consider all options and our fees, we would offer you the soonest available appointment. Most often, this is done the same day.
With our emergency dentist, here in Tooting Bec, we understand the need to be seen urgently.
Whether it is an accident, a broken tooth, a filling come off, sleepless nights or any kind of dental emergency, we aim to give you the soonest possible appointment with same day treatment (whenever possible).
Our dentist would need to initially assess your tooth before making any clinical recommendations. We advise patients not to book any treatment appointments, unless our dentist has carried out a consultation first.
Although the list of dental emergencies cannot all be listed below, here are some frequent occurrences:
Accidents
- Fell off my Bike
- Swimming Pool Accident
- Knocked out Tooth
- Chipped my Tooth
- Tooth is wobbling now
Tooth cavity/broken tooth/filling come off
- The sooner you treat a tooth, the better the chance we can avoid a root canal treatment or extraction.
- A small cavity is generally less complicated to treat than a very large deep cavity.
- If you have a large deep cavity that was there for a very long time, there are chances that a root canal treatment most likely would be required.
- Our dentist would be required to carry out some tests to confirm what treatment is required first.
- Please do not book an emergency dentist appointment for a filling to be done, as this may not be the case.
My crown or bridge has come off
- In some cases, crowns and or bridges can be simply cemented back in place.
- Our dentist would firstly confirm that it is clinically acceptable before recommending to re-cement a dislodged crown or bridge.
- Alternately, all other options of treatment would be discussed during your consultation with our dentist.
Wisdom tooth pain
- All our advice is based on the NICE Guidelines
- In some occasions, removal of the tooth/teeth is recommended
- In some occasions, Extraction of the tooth/teeth is not recommended.
- The longer you leave a wisdom tooth untreated, the more the infection can spread from the area.
- OPG x-rays (in-house) and or CBCT scans (via referral) are available to ensure we use the most modern technology when carrying out any assessment and diagnosis for you.
My face or gum is swollen
- In these cases, your body is telling you that there is a large infection and it is spreading from the source.
- In such cases, it is very important to state this to our receptionist, so that we can give you the highest priority when booking the appointment.
- This should be treated as a matter of emergency without any delays.

It is advised for all patients to make an appointment with our dentist and seek treatment as soon as possible, as in some cases (eg. if the tooth has come out completely from its socket), then the sooner you receive treatment, the better the success rate. Please note it is not possible for us to book both a dental emergency and full mouth examination in the same appointment. These are two separate types of appointments. Dental emergency appointments are shorter and more urgent need appointments that cannot wait. They often pertain to a single tooth or site. Dental examinations are non-urgent appointments where we require a longer appointment to look at all teeth.
We recommend calling us as soon as the emergency arises so that we can see you at the next available appointment. The sooner you call, the sooner we can help.
