Facial Aesthetics Treatments
The way that we look often reflects the way that we feel and one of the most obvious signs of this is our skin. If our skin is dry and wrinkled then we are highly unlikely to feel youthful. Even with the best care in the world and lots of healthy food and exercise though, it is inevitable that our skin will naturally start to show signs of ageing with wrinkles and 'crows feet' becoming more common.
Anti Wrinkle Treatment
Botox is the most widely used treatment for wrinkles. It is actually a shortened term for a protein called 'botulinum toxin' which is produced by bacteria. In very large doses, these bacteria can cause botulism which is very serious indeed and can cause paralysis.
The tiny amounts used in the procedure to reduce wrinkles however will not have this effect but acts to contract the facial muscles by blocking nerve impulses. This means that the muscles are unable to relax and therefore wrinkles are reduced and the skin appears firmer and younger.
Botox injections do not require an anaesthetic and are not painful. A very fine needle is used to inject the Botox into the muscles and within a few days, patients will notice that the wrinkles on their face have become less pronounced. The effect usually lasts around six months after which time, repeat injections will be needed if the results are to be maintained.
As with any procedure such as this, there are a few potential side effects although these are rare and if you have concerns, you should talk to us about them. Possible side effects include nausea, headaches and flu-like symptoms. It is likely too that you will experience some localised bruising where the injection has been administered but this should clear up within a few days.
Dermal fillers are injected into the area of the face where it has become depressed; this often occurs as we produce less collagen, the natural filler, as we get older. In effect, they 'plump up' the areas where it is needed to give a healthy and youthful appearance. They can be used, for example, on crows feet, thin lips or sunken cheeks. They can also be used to hide the appearance of some scars.
No anaesthetic is needed for these injections although if requested, a numbing cream may be applied for those who require it.
